Carpet Measurement Tips for Accurate Estimates
Getting precise carpet measurements saves money and prevents ordering too much or too little. Follow these best practices when using this carpet measurement calculator.
Measure Wall to Wall
Measure each room at its longest and widest points, from the base of one wall to the opposite. Include closets and alcoves as separate entries if you plan to carpet them.
Measure Twice, Order Once
Double-check every measurement. A 6-inch error on a 12 ft room adds 6 sqft — and that compounds across multiple rooms.
Sketch a Floor Plan
Draw each room with dimensions noted. This helps you (and your installer) spot irregularities and plan seam placement before ordering.
Account for Doorways
Carpet usually extends 2-3 inches into doorways under a transition strip. Add this to your room length if the hallway uses a different flooring.
Stairs Need Special Math
For each stair, add the tread depth plus the riser height, then multiply by stair width. A typical staircase of 13 stairs needs 40-52 sqft of carpet.
Always Add Waste
10% waste is industry standard for straight rooms. Use 15% for rooms with many angles, patterned carpet, or custom cuts.
